Communities in Bloom (CIB) is a Canadian non-profit organization committed to fostering civic pride, environmental responsibility and beautification through community participation and the challenge of national competition. Our goal is to promote community action and involvement in improving the tidiness, appearance and visual appeal of neighbourhoods, parks, open spaces and streets through the imaginative use of flowers, plants and trees. In preparing for the Judges arrival in July, the committee is proud to feature community events such as:
CIB Program Highlights Spirit RocksThese painted rocks are works of gratitude, creativity and inspiration. Sometimes graced with images, sometimes blessed with words - they are hidden for you to find and cherish until you are ready to share the message with someone else. Collectible Art Cards EEach year a different local artist donates a specially painted piece to the White Rock Communities in Bloom. The artist interprets what the program represents to the community. The image is then used on promotional material including collectible thank you cards for volunteers, sponsors and Feature Garden recipients. Printing costs are largely sponsored by a local printing company. This year’s painting was donated by the talented Judy Jordison and features our Official Community Plant: the Nootka Rose. The original painting is on display in the Operations Department CIB display case. Our Official Community Plant: The Nootka Rose ![]() Original artwork created for Communities in Bloom by local artist Judy Jordison. In 2006, the Nootka Rose (Rosa nutkana) was named as White Rock's Official Community Plant. CIB spearheaded the campaign by seeking the input of community groups and researching their recommendations. Habitat, appearance, uses, propagation and care were considered until three finalists emerged and submitted for public input. Votes were cast via the City website and the local newspaper until the Nootka Rose was declared the winner - with 60% of your vote! The Nootka rose grows 3 - 9 feet and is a workhorse of the seaside garden. With its delicate pink petals and glorious fragrance, it has the mettle to withstand the many challenges of the coastal environment: wind, salt, sand, sun, fog and rain. It is hardy, pest resistant and beneficial to wildlife. As it grows, it forms thickets that provide an excellent nesting cover and escape habitat for songbirds. At the same time, the deep roots are networking and stabilizing the hilly slopes. For more information on our CIB program, sponsorship
